Swati Singh

Artist Statement

I draw inspiration from the lush tropical landscape of Singapore, aiming to depict moments of wonder, abundance, and tranquility found in nature. Any walk through the parks or reserves in Singapore exposes you to a riot of colors, textures, and forms. The growl of the oriental pied hornbill is interspersed with the 'uwu' of the Asian Koel. The whites and pinks of the rain tree compete with the yellows of the Angsana, each contributing its own unique feature and enhancing the overall experience.

I'm intrigued by the profound impact of nature on our senses, how it resonates within us, and the ways we express this connection. Through my art, I delve into the intricate patterns, interconnectedness, and harmony found in the natural realm. My compositions unfold in layers of vivid colors and abstract forms, capturing the delicate balance and infinite possibilities that define natural surroundings and evoke human emotions.

My art is process-driven and exploratory. I begin without a fixed idea, exploring the interplay of color and form through intuitive layers. The process shifts between structure and spontaneity, akin to solving a puzzle without a reference. The thrill of uncertainty excites me the most. As the work nears completion, I focus on observing and analyzing until all elements harmonize.

Biography

Swati is an abstract expressionist painter who takes inspiration from the tropical landscape in Singapore, the place she has called home for over a decade. Her paintings, characterized by fluid and delicate abstract forms, reflect the artist's interest in the relationship between form, space, and color.

Her fascination for abstract art ignited during a visit to the Modern Art Museum in San Francisco. Upon relocating to Singapore and becoming a mother, she chose to redefine herself, leaving behind a corporate career to pursue art. Starting with no prior art background in 2018, she enrolled in a year-long course on Western Abstract Art and Western Art at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA). Since 2019, she has participated in a number of group shows at The Arts House, Design Orchard, Selegie Arts Centre, German Centre and ION Art Gallery in Singapore. Her works have also found their way into collectors’ homes in Singapore, India, UK, USA and Switzerland.

Her journey into motherhood, navigating the constant balance of being both a mother and a working artist, has deeply influenced her artistic expression.

She works primarily with acrylic paint and other drawing media like charcoal, graphite, oil pastel.
